What is a mindset coach?

A mindset coach is someone who helps people change their ways of thinking, overcome limiting beliefs, and develop new cognitive skills so they can create better outcomes for themselves.

To better understand what a mindset coach does, it’s important to understand the power of our mindset in our daily lives — because mindset is powerful.

Mindset coaching as a practice is based on the notion that our mindset has a massive impact on how we live our lives, including the behaviors we have, the actions we take, and the goals we set for ourselves.

Our mindset includes all of the thoughts and beliefs we have about ourselves, others, and the world around us. These hardwired thoughts affect how we view the various aspects of our lives and, as a result, affect the way we engage with the world around us. Positive thoughts and an open-minded disposition can empower us to act in ways that are beneficial to us.

On the other hand, negative, limiting beliefs can keep us stuck in life, repeating unhealthy patterns of behavior, remaining in bad situations, or not living up to our true potential.

How do mindset coaches help their clients?

Mindset coaches help people reprogram their mindset and reframe their thoughts, so they can overcome the beliefs that are keeping them stuck.

There are many different topics that mindset coaches can help clients with, including self-esteem, mindfulness, procrastination, positive thinking, and more.

When you think about it, mindset coaches have the power to help people truly transform their lives and achieve goals that they never even thought possible. That’s the power of mindset!

7 Steps to becoming a mindset coach

Now that you know what a mindset coach is, you probably want to know how to become one. Lucky for you, it only takes seven steps. Let’s dive in.

  1. Find your niche
  2. Get certified (or don’t!)
  3. Set up your online mindset coaching business
  4. Build your mindset coaching plans
  5. Price your mindset coaching services
  6. Market your mindset coaching business
  7. Keep learning

Step 1: Find your niche

First thing’s first, you’ll need to find your coaching niche.

Your coaching niche is the topic or area of expertise that you focus on in your coaching practice. Your niche (i.e. your specialization) will determine your target audience and the kinds of services you’ll offer as a coach.

While mindset is itself a coaching niche, there are plenty of sub-niches within this category to explore, from enhancing productivity to overcoming creative blocks.

Benefits of finding your niche

So, why find your sub-niche? To put it broadly, niching down helps you better serve your audience and, ultimately, earn more money. If we want to get more granular about it, there are a number of different reasons to define your niche (or sub-niche), including:

  • Better helping your clients by creating specific, effective solutions to their pain points.
  • Better reaching your target audience with targeted marketing campaigns and promotion tactics.
  • Clarifying your purpose as a coach so you can run and grow your business more effectively.
  • Earning more money by delivering more effective (i.e. profitable) services.
  • Getting a leg up on the competition by determining your unique value proposition (i.e. your secret sauce).

Identify your passion and expertise

The first step in finding your niche is identifying your expertise and passion. Growing your mindset coaching business from your own strength and passions helps you deliver more effective services and makes your business a lot more sustainable in the long run. If you don’t have the expertise to address your clients’ needs or the drive to keep helping others, your business can easily run out of steam — and you can even burn out.

Conduct market research

From there, you’ll need to do some market research to figure out which niches within your wheelhouse will turn a profit. For this step, you’ll want to conduct a little keyword research to see which niches are most in-demand (i.e. have the most search engine inquiries) and are the least competitive (i.e. have the fewest search engine results).

In other words, a niche with high-demand and low-competitiveness is your best bet in terms of earning the most as a mindset coach.

Step 2: Get certified (or don’t!)

Before you can start setting up your mindset coaching business, you might want to get certified — or not!

A common question among prospective mindset coaches is, “Do I need to get certified to become a mindset coach?” The answer is no, certification isn’t a requirement to becoming a life coach.

Some coaching industries do require you to complete a coaching certification program (and, typically, these are health-related industries). However, mindset coaching isn’t one of them. Although, if you’re niching down, you’ll definitely want to look into whether your specific sub-niche does require certification.

Why don’t mindset coaches need any certification?

Because, as a mindset coach, you aren’t offering mental health solutions or claiming to be a mental health professional. Rather, you’re helping clients change their ways of thinking and reframe their beliefs — and this kind of expertise doesn’t require certification.

That being said, there are plenty of mindset coaching certification programs out there and you’re certainly free to pursue them if you want.

While certification can help bolster your credibility with prospective clients and give you a leg up over your (uncertified) competitors, the truth is that most coaching programs aren’t created by authoritative organizations and, in that case, don’t actually add much value to your business.

If you do want to get certified, however, you’ll definitely want to choose a program from a reputable organization, like the International Coaching Federation.

Step 3: Set up your online mindset coaching business

Now, it’s time to get your mindset coaching business online. (How else are you going to start selling your digital services?)

As a first step, you’ll need to create your business’s website. Now, you might be wondering, “Why, in the age of social media, do I need to create a website for my business?” While TikTok and Instagram might be king when it comes to content marketing, a good old website is still essential for any online business, for a few reasons.

First and foremost, a website acts as a hub for all things related to your business. Here, potential clients can learn all about you and your practice, discover your social media channels, view your content, and browse your offering of digital products and services via your online storefront.

A website also lends your business extra credibility and shows potential clients that you’re a professional who takes your work seriously. And, finally, having a website gives your business a better foothold on search engines like Google, so that more potential clients can find you and your services.

Step 4: Build your mindset coaching plans

Now that you’ve set up your business, it’s time to create your products. And for a mindset coach, that means building out your offering of coaching plans.

Identify your program’s topic, purpose, and target audience

Before you can start creating your first coaching program, you’ll need to decide on the topic it will address. To determine your program’s topic, you’ll want to look to your coaching niche (or sub-niche) to guide you. Your niche will dictate the range of topics you can rightfully tackle with your program.

Example: If your niche is creative mindset coaching, then you won’t be creating a program about debt management (save that for the financial coaches). Instead, you’ll want to focus on specific topics within your niche’s wheelhouse, which might include overcoming creative blocks, fostering a creative mindset, overcoming procrastination, and enhancing productivity.

Once you’ve chosen your program’s topic, you’ll need to define its purpose. It’s helpful to think of your program’s purpose as its list of objectives and its outcome. In other words, what is your program trying to help clients achieve? To answer that question, however, you’ll first need to figure out what your clients want to achieve, which requires some market research to define your target audience, and pinpoint their needs and pain points.

Determine your coaching strategy

After you’ve determined the “what” of your program, you’ll need to dive into the “how.” This means determining exactly how you’ll help your client achieve your coaching plan’s intended outcome. This step includes determining the activities and tactics you’ll be using throughout your program, in addition to developing the assessment tools you’ll use to gauge and track your client’s progress and success.

Build out your mindset coaching program week-by-week

Now that you’ve got all the nuts and bolts nailed down, it’s finally time to build out your coaching plan, session by session.

When creating your program, it’s important to keep in mind your client’s growth journey. This means that each session should be distinct, with its own clearly laid-out topic, objectives, activities, and client homework. The breadth of material you’ll cover throughout the program will determine the total number of sessions. Your program can be as long as you’d like, however, the standard coaching program typically runs from 8 weeks to 12 weeks.

Step 5: Price your mindset coaching services

So, now you’ve created your mindset coaching plans. Congratulations! However, before you can start selling them — and raking it in — you’ll need to give them a price.

For this step, you’ll need to dig into a bit more market research. Your expertise is valuable and you worked hard to create your mindset coaching plans. However, you also want to price your programs competitively so that they’ll really fly off those (digital) shelves.

In order to price your program competitively, you’ll need to, well, check out your competition. Find other mindset coaches (or coaches within your sub-niche) and look at how they’re pricing similar offerings.

Typically, mindset coaches give their plans package pricing. This means that each program is given one lump-sum price, rather than individual prices per session. Once you’ve priced your plan, it’s up to you whether you’d like your clients to pay the entire cost upfront or pay it off weekly as they complete each session.

Step 6: Market your mindset coaching business

Now that you’ve created and priced your offering, it’s time to get them in front of potential clients. This means marketing your mindset coaching business.

Luckily, there are quite a few ways to promote and market your mindset coaching services online.

Promote your services with content

The most intuitive way to promote your coaching services as a content creator is with, well, content. If you have a social media following of any size, you already have a built-in pool of potential clients for your product — all you need to do is let them know it exists. If you don’t yet have a following, you’ll definitely want to start creating content on your social platform of choice to start growing your following.

Whether your platform of choice is YouTube or TikTok, when promoting your coaching services with content, you’ll want to keep a few things in mind. First, it’s important that your marketing content doesn’t feel like an advertisement or sales pitch. Remember: your audience follows you for your coaching expertise and the value your content brings to their lives, so your marketing content should feel equally educational and enlightening.

To do this, we suggest creating content that’s thematically similar to your services and subtly integrating a CTA that tells your audience that they can access more of your expertise by purchasing your services. In other words, your marketing content can give your audience a small taste of what your latest mindset coaching program is all about, while encouraging them to enroll to reap the full benefits.

Build an email list

Did you know that, even in the age of social media, email marketing remains one of the most effective digital marketing strategies out there?

Sure, in the era of TikTok and Reels, emails might seem antiquated, but the numbers don’t lie, with email marketing generating a ROI of $36 for every dollar spent. This means that, in addition to being a great way to build an audience for your products, email marketing is a powerful way to convert leads into paying customers. With all this in mind, you’ll definitely want to harness the power of email marketing to promote your mindset coaching business.

Before you can start creating and sending out email marketing campaigns, you’ll first need to build an email list. This is the list of subscribers who will receive your promotional newsletters. There are a few different methods (and tons of email marketing tools) that you can use to capture your followers’ contact info, including adding opt-in forms to your link-in-bio website or creating lead magnets.

Offer free taster sessions

Want to turn your followers into paying clients? As a mindset coach, you can also market your business by offering free “taster” sessions to prospective clients.

A taster session is a short, 15 to 30-minute long call that gives your lead a “taste” of the expertise you have to offer. The idea is that, after the session is finished and your client has seen the kind of value you can bring to their lives, they’ll want to enroll in your paid programs to continue accessing your expertise. In other words, taster sessions are powerful conversion tools

You can promote your taster sessions the same way you would promote your regular coaching programs, either through your social media channels or via your newsletter.

Step 7: Keep learning

The final step on the ladder to becoming a successful mindset coach is to continue growing and learning.

Of course, once you start out as a mindset coach and begin coaching real clients, you’ll learn more about how to create effective programs and run your business through practice. On top of that, it helps to stay up to date with new trends, tactics, and tools within your niche.

Mindset coaching FAQ

How much does a mindset coach make?

There’s no limit to how much mindset coaches can make. While life coaching pro Luisa Zhou cites that the average pay for coaches is $62,500 per year in the U.S., your net coaching income depends on how much work you’re willing to put into your business, including the number of billable hours you’re willing to work, the amount of effort you put into creating your offering, and the amount of time you put into your marketing initiatives.
